UGLY CLASH IN INDIA
DEBT COLLECTION RIOT
CALCUTTA, September 28,
Seven were killed and CO badly injured in a three-hour battle botwecn Hindu and Moslem peasants in the Miamvnli district of tho Punjab.
A Hindu landlord, accompanied by bailiffs and a hundred employees, wont to attach a Moslem's land in execution of a Court decree. They were surrounded by an angry crowd of peasants armed with spears. Words and a fierce endountor ensued. The landlord is among tho dead. Two English polico officers, four constables, and two bill-collectors wore seriously injured by an Indian doctor who ran amuck in a Bombay house when the bill-collectors and the police called to demand'six months' arrears of rent. The doctor rushed them with an enormous ancient sword, but was shot dead by a polico officer's revolver after a bitter struggle.
