ACETYLENE LAMP
STEEPLE ROCK LIGHT
As soon as the weather and the sea conditions arc favourable tho temporary kcroseno lamp and its wooden fixings on Steeple Rock, oft; Scatoun,' arc to be replaced by a Swedish-made acetylene gns "ACA" lamp. Mr. E. D. Cachemaillc, engineer to tho Wellington Harbour Board, informed, a "Post' 1 reporter today that everything was in readiness for tho transfer last Tuesday morning and again yesterday, but on both occasions conditions were unsuitable. When tho weather in town seems quite good for such work, very often there is a heavier sea running in the harbour entrance than most, peoplo would imagine The acetylene gas for the "AGA" lamp is supplied by cylinders which havo to be renewed every five or six woeks. The new light, a red one, has a range of visibility iv clear weather of from seven to eight miles It will not bo discernible from the Heads, but will be visible to all outward-bound vessels as they round Point Gordon, and across tho fairway to a lino which runs roughly east and west between Steoplo Rock and the opposite shore. The Harbour Board's floating crane Hikitia. probably will be used to romovc the temporary woodon fixings, and then tho new lamp and its cylinder will bo placed in position. Provided conditions aro right, tho work should not take more than a day or two.
