FRANKLIN OUT-FOUGHT
MCKAY'S DECISIVE WIN
A set of circumstances, involving th* inability of either Archie Hughes or Glarry Eayner to appear, resulted in; the Marlborough Boxing Association staging last Saturday a bout which Gisborne was at one time anxious to put' on. This was a contest between the two Gisborno boys, Joe Franklin (late holder of the lightweight title) and Johnny McKay. The latter Was keen for a title engagement but did- not get it and, when ho had the chance of Blenheim to provo his superiority over his fellow townsman, he made no race of it, winning practically every round. Franklins long period of inactivity placed him at a disadvantage and, to meet his wishes, tho number of rounds was reduced to twelve. ,He was also out-weighted by 8} pounds, McKay's 9st lOJlb placing him in the welterweight division. McKay handed out terrific punishment throughout the, contest and the wonder was that Franklin: was still on his feet at the finish. It ■was a rugged fight with very little science. In contrast with the capacity house a fortnight previously, when Hughes and Bayner proved the attraction, there was' a small attendance, the takings totalling only about £48. As the boxers were guaranteed £20 each, plus £15 expenses, the association lost heavily on tho tournament.
