COSTLY TRAVEL
WRESTLER'S COMPLAINT
Though Gus Sonncnorg will have to wait until he has completed his-New Zealand activities before he can .form an opinion regarding the possibilities offering to wrestlers in this country it did not take him. long to make up his mind upon another matter. "There is one thing I can ady right now," he remarked to tho writer when in Wellington, "and that is tliat the high cost of transport in New Zealand is a definite drawback so far as your country's power of attracting wrestlers is concerned. "I have been booked for two matches in the South Island and, in. order 10 carry put those matches on dates to suit the local promoting bodies, I am obliged to travel by air. It would cost mo £50 in your money for the,air transport alone for that visit, and I have to pay for long train journeys as well. That is not good business and, believe me, those matches would not have been made had I been given the opportunity of making my own arrangements. BACKWARD AIR SERVICES. "One can travel a long way in mv country for the 200 dollars charged here for that little hop, and I am surprised that you people have not developed yomair services to an. extent anywhere near approaching those available in America." Sonnenberg had an experience of flying in New Zealand on his second day day in. the Dominion. He left the Auckland aerodrome on his way to Wellington to keep his engagement against Meyer, but had flown only as far as Hamilton when his pilot decided to return owing to the unfavourable conditions. He was landed back at Auckland and <samo down by rail. This enforced change of plan caused consid j erable anxiety among those who had heard in Wellington that he had left to come by air, since it yras not discovered until, a late hour what had taken place. Sonnenberg has since said that he will not do any air travelling in New Zealancl in the small single-seaters of the type iii which he set out from. Auckland. The American wrestlers make frequent use of aeroplanes in travelling about the country, and several of them have previously mefully remarked upon the expense involved.
