THE POULTRY BOARD
BUTTERMILK POWDER
Figures available up to the beginning or September show that many thousands of poultry-keepers have not registered their poultry runs according to the requirements of the Act. The Government Census of 1926 showed over 30,000 flocks of 25 or more fowls, yet less than 13,000 have registered. There may still be some owners not familiar with the fact that by law they must register at their nearest post office and the Act provides that failure to do so renders owners liable to 'prosecution. Granted that we have too many taxc« to pay these days, but the fee is so very small that no one should default on the grounds of economy I The Act^ was passed in order that poultrymen might help themselves to improve their industry, and it must be very disappointing to the board to find the response so poor. It is stated that in the meantime the board will not take any action in respect to those who niako voluntary overdue registrations, and it is hoped that the next month or so will see many more fees paid. In the past, organisation has been attempted by a small percentage of poultry-keepers, each paying in from £5 to £20 per annum,, but as the years went by these men realised that some scheme was required to cover all of those engaged in making a profit from selling eggs, and already the board is being criticised for not having.solved all of the poultry-keepers' problems. Those who realise the position know very well that the board is establishing itself on a sound basis, and as time goes on this will be proved. For the protection of poultry-keepers it is mentioned that no one is authorised to collect fees excepting postmasters and the secretary of the board.
