In the days of his presidency of the Wellington Cricket Umpires' Association, the late Mr. W. R. Bock made what came to be known as his "annual appeal" for more members of the association. Mr. Bock has passed on, but the appeal for more members continnes.

Tho chairman (Mr. W. Toomath), at the annual' meeting of Jthe association last night, said a plan had'been suggested to him whereby the ranks of the association might be strengthened. There were many gentlemen, keen followers of the game, who were in tha habit of attending the games, he said. They were to be seen regularly and it had been pointed out that perhaps with a little judicious encouragement these gentlemen might be induced: to see cricket from the very best part of the ground—one end of the wicket —smoke their pipes, count six, and share their pleasure with twenty-two players, rather than pursue the mores selfish way of smoking their pipes on a, bench while they looked- on. •■

The annual report of the association also contained an appeal for increased membership. The need for more umpires, it was stated, was especially great in the junior grades. . .

As a result of falling off a wall ten feet high yesterday, W. Winter, a plasterer, of 14 Holloway Road, received injuries to his left foot. He wag taken from his home to the Hospital by the Free Ambulance.
