RAIN IN THE NORTH
FAIR TO CLOUDY WEATHER
Special forecast for Wellington:— Fresh winds from the east or south-east. Weather mainly fair and mild, and some rain likely tonight.
The northern cyclone is now centred to the north-east of Cape Maria Van Diemen and pressure has fallen generally over New Zealand. The general forecast issued at noon today, therefore, is for moderate to strong easterly to north-easterly winds. The weather in -western, districts will be mainly fair, but elsewhere it will be cloudy to overcast, and misty or foggy in places, with scattered and variable rains. Temperatures will still be mild.
The cyclone has been responsible for heavy rain and strong north-easterly winds in the Auckland Province, Waihi reporting a fall as heavy as 5.96 inches during the last 24 hours. Elsewhere the rain has been lighter in character, and since last night has extended ovei' tho remainder of the North Island and to the northern portion of tho South Island. The. greater part of the South Island, however, has continued to enjoy fair to fine weather. Mild temperatures have ruled and winds have been light to fresh easterlies or northeasterlies.
Auckland's weather was wet yesterday and last night, tho wind being a strong one from the north-east. At 9 a.m. tod,ay a moderate northerly wind was blowing, the weather being fair to cloudy. Wellington had another fine and sunny day with a thin layer of cloud over the sky most of the day. The morning's light easterly wind freshened somewhat during the afternoon. Some light rain, one point only, fell at 8.30 this morning. At 9 a.m. skies were overcast, but the sun subsequently shone again, the wind still being a light easterly.
Christchureh had a dull day with a keen north-easterly breeze. Some light rain fell there early this morning, and it was drizzling with an easterly breeze at 9 a.m.
Duncdin enjoyed a fine and sunny day with a north-easterly breeze. After a sharp frost last night, this morning broke calm and clear.
