Mother Superior, leading two-year-old last season, is due to make her reappearance in the Seaficld Handicap, 7% furlongs, at next week's Wanganui Meeting. She is weighted 71b above wcight-for-age in a field in which the minimum is 7.7.
The Royal Stag gelding Velvet made a one-horse race of the Hunters' Plate at the Otago Hunt Meeting last Saturday. He is a brother to Royal Buck, and he has now won twice on end in three starts to date.
As there is no mention of them in the cable messages, presumably Sir Simper and Radiant. Star did not fulfil their engagements in the Memsie Stakes anrl Doona Trial respectively at Caulfield last Saturday.
The Wanganui owner-trainer Mr. L. G. Paul docs not have many horses in work at a time, but those he does are usually the makings of useful sorts. In the maiden race at the Wanganui Meeting next week he will be represented by Amante, a four-year-old chestnut mare by Chief Ruler from the Limond mare Adorable, a sister to Alloway and halfsister to All Supreme and Alcides.
Peterette is usually a good fencer, but she crashed into the first of the brush hurdles forming the stand double in the Otago Hunt Cup Steeples at Wingatui last Saturday. The state of the going may have been responsible for the bad jump.
In view of their. entry for the New Zealand Cup it is of interest to note that King's Knave is asked to concede Peter Jackson lib and Spiral 81b in the mile and a quarter Marangai Handicap at the Wanganui Meeting next week.
According to a report from Melbourne, the trouble with Silver Ring has been an abscess on the jaw, but fortunately it has not seriously interfered with his training. His trainer (R. W. King) has yet to decide whether he shall remain in Sydney for the A.J.C. Meeting, or go south early for the Victorian meetings.
Shatter was heavily backed in his engagement at Kensington (Sydney) last week,' but like many horses first time out on that tricky course was beaten by the strange conditions^ The race went to Prince Pombal, ridden by J. Pike, who conceded Shatter 21b and led all the way.
Apparently the connections of the seven-year-old hunter The Ark hold a good opinion of him, as they have engaged him for the open handicap at Wanganui next week. He is also in the hack distance fivent, and the handicapper has placed him on the minimum in that as well as in the open event.
In view of the fact that women owners were first and second in the last New Zealand Cup, it is interesting to note that the nominees of four sportswomen appear in the list for the race next November. They are Mrs. H. B. Douglas (Rocket), Mis* M. C. Wilson (Argentic), Mrs. S. L. Parsons (Jonathan), and Mrs. M. S. Curie (Red Manfred).
The New Zealand trainer P. Brady, who was located at Flemington when he first went to Australia and has been at Mentone for over, two months, has returned to Flemington with Royal Visitor and the two-year-old Teak. Spearsonj, who was also taken to Australia by Brady, is now being trained by W. Roberts, mi is stated to be a promising sort.
Red Racer won his Duncdin Cup two years ago with the assistance of a heavy track, and on Saturday, although his recent form had been hopeless, he made a return to the winning list under similar conditions. It would be unwise to assume, however, that Red Racer has taken a new lease of his racing life (says a southern critic).
Farndale, who finished third in the Memsie Stakes at Caulficld last Saturday, is a three-year-old bay colt by Curialas, a grandson of Spearmint and Sceptre. He is by the Derby winner Spion Kop, who begot Felstead, another blue ribbon winner. Farndale was the first foal of his dam, AH Chatter, who is by Magpie from Eleanorcss, a half-sister to Greenstead, by the Persimmon horse Sea Prince.
