BOXING
WRIGHT DEFEATS HAWES
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHUECH, September 4. George Wright, holder, defeated Percy Hawes, challenger, on points in a professional boxing contest here tonight in which the New Zealand' bantamweight championship was. at stake. Wright won very narrowly on points after a 15 rounds contest full of ■ fierce exchanges at close and long range. Wright's forcing tactics in the middle stages carried the day. Hawes was out on his feet at one stage, but rallied and more than held his own in the last four rounds.
It was announced that the bout was the last that Wright would contest.
At the annual .meeting of the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales Colonel Spain (president of Taronga Park Trust) remarked that Freda and Freddie, the orang-outangs in the Zoo, had been measured for plus fours,- and these animals had progressed so far towards the humans that application might yet be made to have them enrolled as members of the Zoological Society.
