TWO GIRLS CHARGED
VISIT TO CABARET
Two well-dressed young girls, Ruby Bullift'y, aged 26, and Olive May Fletcher, aged 24, appeared in the Magistrato's Court today, before Mr. E. Page, S.M., charged with the theft of £15, the property of Kenneth Haywood Taylor May, a salesman, of New Plymouth. Tho accused, who wero represented by Mr. A. B. Sicvwright, elected to be tried by jury. Giving evidence, May said that on August 28 ho was staying at the Regent Hotel... Shortly after 6 p.m. ho met the two accused in the lounge, and after "shouting" for them took them in to dinner. He had never met the accused before, and at that tinio did not know their names. They said they were going to Nelson and wer,e staying at the Bristol Hotel. Witness said that at tho suggestion of the accused, ho accompanied them to Pankhurst's cabaret at Lyall Bay. When ho left the hotel he had £15 in notes and from 15s to £1 in silver. Drinks wero consumed by witness and the accused at the cabaret, and, after having supper, witness felt ill. All three left the cabaret after midnight, and on the way to town witness had to leave the taxi as he again felt ill. The accused were very concerned and did their best to assist him, but when he got back to tho taxi they were not there and he returned to the hotel alone. On reaching the hotel he searched his pockets and found that two £5 notes and five £1 notes were missing. Cross-examined, the witness said that when he went to the cabaret he was not drunk. He had about eight drinks at tho cabaret, but he could not recollect how much money ho spent on liquor. Ho denied suggesting that the girls should change their hotel and go to tho Regent, and also that ho offered them money at the cabaret. When he ordered drinks, he might have handed money over to the girl to pay for them. Ho could not recollect who paid for the taxi on his return to the hotel. At this stage tho case was adjourned until tomorrow morning.
