BOBBY CALF MEAT

BEING HELD IN STORE

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

' AUCKLAND, August 27.

In spite of tho ban on the shipment of veal to the United Kingdom, some exporters arc adopting the course of freezing bobby calf meat and holding it in store, according to information current in the trade, in Auckland. It is suggested, that in somo cases at least English buyers are concerned in the arrangements. :

Tlie position, is an unusual one iis far as the farmer is concerned. He is receiving a price today which does not contemplate a sale for tho meat. In effect ho is charging the shipper nothing, or next to nothing, for tho meat. The average price at the farm gate is about Is 9d a head. Immediately prior to tho embargo about 3s 6d was being paid, so that presumably the difference of Is 9d represents th© export value of tho meat. It was understood that the meat would be boiled down at tho works for stock meaL

If tho embargo were lifted today the meat in store would at once appreciate in valuo to the extent of 2s a carcass live weight. It is tho possibility of securing a lifting of the embargo which has influenced tho present position. Moat can be held for many months without risk of deterioration.

The main uso of bobby calf meat m England is for filling purposes for pies and other small goods. As such meat does not come in direct competition with ordinary tablo meat, on this basis it was questioned some weeks ago whether the embargo should bo continued.

It is believed that freezing arrangements have beon in progress about two weeks and that the Now Zealand Meat Producers' Board has been advised. A statement from tho board seems warranted at this stage in view of the importance of the bobby calf trado to tno cheese industry.
