(British Official Wireless.)

RUGBY, August 2-1

A determined effort is being mado to lessen the noiso of London streets at night, and as from Monday next any motorist who, within radius of five miles of Charing Cross, sounds a horn between 11.30 p.m. and 7 a.m. will render himself liable to a fine.

Tho Minister of Transport, Mr. L. Hore-Belisha, has also appointed a •committee of seven specialists, presided over by the well-known engineer, Sit Henry Fowler, to consider and report on the principal causes of noise in the operation of mechanically-propelled vehicles and steps which can effectively bo taken to limit it. Tho committee includes representatives of motor-car and motor-cycle manufacturers, scientists from the National Physical Laboratory, and officials of tho Ministry of Transport. Sir Henry Fowler is chairman of the committee of tho British Association which has been considering tho question of reduction "of noise, and has already carried out important investigations on tho subject. The committee was sot up at last year's British Association meeting, and its experiments have been carried out at Southampton University and tho National Physical Laboratory. Tho results will be publicly disclosed at tho association's meeting at Aberdeen next month, which will be attended by tho Minister of Transport. It is understood that scientists have perfected.a silencer which reduces the noise of motor engines to a minimum without lessening their power.
