Although somo of the floods, aresubsiding, tho waters of the Ganges at Patna remain nearly forty feet abovo normal. Many villages have been washed away and scores of carcasses of cattle and the- thatched roofs of houses carried down, stream.

It. is also feared that thore will bo a heavy death roll in tho area around Monghyr which was devastated in the earthquake of January, and is now inundated by tho Ganges. Gravo fears are felt for the safety of tho £3,000,000 Hardinge Bridge over the Ganges on the East Bengal line. An army of eleven hundred workmen has been employed since March in an effort to save the bridge from destruction by the erection of protective works, which are designed to guide tho erratic course of the river.
