THE ORATORIO "ELIJAH"
Addressing the British Music Society on Saturday evening. Mr. T. L. Buick gave an interesting lecture on Mendelssohn's well-known oratorio, "Elijah." A report of the lecture appears on page 13.
In tho course of his address. Mr. Buick Baid that tho oratorio, in its later form, was first sung in Christenurch in 1871 and iu Wellington in 1878 under the baton of Mr. Robert Parker.
At the close of the lecture a vote of thanks was given to the lecturer, on the motion of the president of the society, Mr. E. M. Page, who spoke in eulogistic terms of both the manner and the matter of the address. The matter was, he said, most informative; the manner delightful.
During tlie evening musical numbers were provided by Miss Elsie Grix, who played Mendelssohn's piano "Prelude in E. Minor/' and by Mrs. Wilfrid Andrews, who snng two arias from "Elijah"—"Woe Unto Them That Forsake Him" and "0 Rest in the Lord." ■
