SPORTING

FOR TARANAKI HUNTS

NEW PLYMOUTH ASPIRANTS

ORAPAI GALLOPING WELL

(Special from "Hurry On.")

NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day

Owing to the heavy rainfall the New Plymouth track has been under water in places during the greater part of tho past week and there has been little work. However, conditions had improved by Saturday morning and with the combined Hunts Meeting less than a week off practically every horse with engagements was galloped. All the fast work took place on the courso proper with the flags well oivt. The track was still heavy and the times consequently slow. Without being out to make time Superior and Headmistress worked solidly over seven furlongs at a good threoquarter pace, both finishing well. Eazor was allotted a working gallop over a circuit. Amyril gave Gold Mission :i length start and finished on terms at the end of half a milo in sDsec. This was the best time recorded over this distance and both mares shaped well. Gold Mission's effort was a pleasing one for a maiden, and she handled the going in good style. . Golden Rill again just shaded Grateful over two furlongs in 292see. Grateful, however, is -tho moro forward of tho pair and may race at Marton. Orapai, who handled tho going splendidly, finished on too solidly for Leo Colossus at tho conclusion of six furlongs in lmin 22 3-ssec. They ran the first half-mile in 51sec and consequently it was not surprising to find Leo Colossus stopping at the end. It was a rattling good gallop on the part of Orapai, who should not bo long in winning a race if the tracks keep soft. Ngarcta appeared to bo going better than Count Lendroff at the conclusion of a round, the last five furlongs taking lmin 13i}sec. Ngarota has done all that has been asked of her in good stylo of late. She schooled well in company with Anchiscs on Friday morning. The two hunters Sleep and Mataro were sent seven furlongs, the last six taking lmin 29see. This pair gave a splendid exhibition over tho schooling fences on Friday morning, Mataro boing particularly impressive.

Prince Colossus was exercised on tho inside. He has built up splendidly during his spell and looks in tip-top order to commence a preparation. H. Dulieu stated that ho intends only to hack him round as yet and he will not start work in earnest until tho middle of next month.

Lalla Quex and Davistock were associated over seven furlongs, the last five taking lmin 13sec. Italia Quex is improving quickly and might, be capable of springing a surprise at the meeting. Davistock did not accept for Thursday but may be soon in action on the second day. ... . Illuminato (H. Dulieu) gave a good exhibition over four hurdles. He is engaged in tho hack six on the opening day but will probably take his place ia the field for the hurdles on Saturday.

Tahurangi, who handled the going in good stylo, ran right away from Potere at tlio end of six furlongs in lniin 24see. Ho is working splendidly at present and Ms prospects for the meeting look decidedly bright. Anehisos hit out freely over seven furlongs at a good three-quarter pace. Ho appears to be standing up to his work well and showing no signs of un- ! soundnesk Goneral Quex decisively defeated Ringsido over a half a. mile in sGsec. He began smartly and the pair ran the first two furlongs in 25 2-osec. General Quex then''drew right away from his companion and finished full of running. It was an attractive effort and shows that this three-year-old is improving fast. . .

Courtega finished .half :i length in front of 'Ythan, with Adept a length and a half away, at the conclusion of six furlongs, the last five being covered in lmin ll|sec. Courtega again worked impressively, .and Ythan's effort was distinctly promising; as he has not done a great deal of galloping sinco joining Dulieu's team. Bay Sand shaded Spender over halt a mile in 56 4-ssec, both moving well. Spender handled the going better than lie. has done previously, but Bay Sand is a, good track galloper. tied Fox and Joy Box hopped off at the half-mile and ran the first two fur-; longs in 26 l-ssee. They looked like j recording good time when. Joy Box's saddle slipped and he had to bo cased up Bed Fox finishing about a length in'front in 57-Jsee.

Mr. D. Kemp has decided to train on the Foxton course, and has arrived in Foxton with Mercian Prince- and Foreign Queen: :
