NOT AT HIS BEST

BAER TIRED IN TITLE BOUT

A few days prior to the Carnora-Baor contest something of a sensation was created when it was announced that the New York Boxing Commission • was doubtful regarding the challenger's condition and it was considered that it might be advisable to postpone the fixture. Though the match took place oa the, scheduled date and resulted in an easy win for Baor, the opinion of competent critics that the end would have come much sooner than the eleventh round had Baer been in the best of condition was substantiated by Baer in the course of an interview with Wilbur Wood, sports editor of the "New York Sun."

Wood writos that tho experts who doubted Baer's condition were not completely fooled but were thrown off the track far enough to be badly out in their predictions regarding thd outcome of' the fight. Just when Baor had Camera ready for tho coup-do-grace it was necessary for him to step back and take a rest himself. He practically gave away several rounds to Camera because ho .was tiring. Baor Js victorious battle was waged according to strategy carefully worked out in advance by Baer, Jack Dempsey, Ancil Hoffman (Baer's manager), and Mikb Oahtwoll (his trainer). In a statement Baer gave full credit to his advisers, and also admitted that neither ho nor Dempsey was entirely satisfied regarding his condition. They would, have liked to have had an additional week and'actually asked for a postponement for that period. Baer said that he trainod to work in spurts, trusting to do enough to Camera in each of those attacks to' keep him quiet while he, (Baer) prepared for the next. Wood concludes that he is satined that Baer is not as '.'nutty" as he sometimes appears, but has any amount of shrewdness in regard, to both. ling strategy and business management.
