RAILWAY SHOPS BUSY
"X" ENGINES SCHEDULE
NEW COPPERSMITH'S SHOP
There is considerable activity at the Hutt railway workshops at present. The programme of construction of the "X" engines is being carried out, and good progress is being made. It is expected that the twentieth "X" will be completed by the end of the current financial year. Work in the coppersmith's shop has increased to such an extent ns to necessitate separate provision being mad? for it. The present coppersmith's shop is located in the main buildings, but the space is inadequate to allow of the handling of the necessary work, and the provision of a new separate coppersmith's shop will enable the Hutt workshops to handle all the electric motor repair work in the North Island. Work on points anil crossings in connection ■ with the new Wellington station yard and main lines northward is extensive, and has resulted in such a large increase in the amount of work on points anil crossings generally that an extra shift is being wprked. In order to provide a sufficient area to lay out and assemble the work to the best advantage, a small addition to the shops has been found necessary. In addition, the shops generally are busy with the never-ending work of maintenance and repair of engines, cars, and wagons to ensure the- safe running of the trains. The fact that the shops are now making a large proportion of rolling-stock ' parts which were formerly imported helps to keep them busy.
