WORK AT KAWARAU

REQUEST FOR SURVEY

POWER AND IRRIGATION

(By Telegraph) (Special to the "Evening Post.") DUNEDIN, July 24. To irrigate 14,000 acres of improperly irrigated land at Bannoekburn, to provide a hydro-electrical entry for the working of Cromwell Flat, to provide power for tho Kawarau Company, and to assist that company in its project of dewatcring the river, were the objects' of a scheme propounded by Mr. W. A. Bodkin, - M.P., at a public meeting at Cromwell. Mr. Bodkin said that, having learnt that tho Kawarau Company had capital of £400,000 practically assured, and that the company was successfully floated at Home, and since tho Unemployment Board had determined to set aside £250,000 for the rehabilitation of industry, ho had decided to endeavour to got a substantial proportion of that amount for the rehabilitation of the mining industry in Central Otago. The successful flotation of tho Kawarau Company meant that the Kawarau River would be worked. Nothing could be undertaken in any part of the world that would give a greater-impetus to the gold-mining industry than tho successful accomplishment of tho Kawarau scheme. Tho meeting decided that the Government bo asked to make a survey of the project for a hydro-electric and irrigation scheme from tho Nevis River, and that the Mines Department bo urged to undertake the systematic boring of Cromwell Flat.
