RAILWAYS TO BE ABANDONED

A number of branch and spur lines of the Canadian National system are to be abandoned in tho cause of economy, and in a desire to eliminate unnecessary competition between it and tho Canadian Pacific. An illustration of economy in the Canadian National Railway in recent years was given by the chairman of the C.N.R. Trust. There are now, ho said, only six executive officers of tho system receiving over £3000 a year. In 1931, there were thirty-six. Compensation for these officers, dispensed wjth in 1931, totalled £135,000,000; the sum had" dropped to £23,000 last year.
