ALBERT MEDAL
THIS YEAR'S AWARD

With ..the: approval of the : Diike of Connaught, • president, the Council of the Eoya} Society.of Arts has awarded the society's Albert Medal for 1934 to Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins, P. 8.5., "for his researches in Biochemistry and the Constituents of Foods." Sir Frederick has been Professor of Biochemistry in the University of Cambridge since; 1914, and- Sir "William Dunn. prof essor since 1921. He received the Nobel: Prize in 1929, the Boyal Medal of:the Eoyal Society in 1918, and the Copley. Medal in 1926. He has been the foremost leader in biochemical: research! for ..twenty-five years, andvhis name is intimately associated with one of the most important discoveries of the century, which is summed up in the word "vitamins."
The, society's. Albert Medal .was instituted in 1862 as a memorial to the Prince Consort, for eighteen years president of the society, and is awarded annually for "distinguished merit in promoting Arts, Manufactures, or Commerce." The first medal was awarded to Sir Eowland Hill, and the list of medallists includes such famous men as Faraday, de Lesseps, Lord Kelvin, Joule, Helmholtz, Perkin, Edison, Lister, Bunsen, Crookes, Eayleigh, Parsons, Marconi, Sir J. J. Thomson, Sir Oliver Lodge, and Lord ButhertorS.
