A TRIP ABROAD

OEEER TO LIBRARIAN

FROM CARNEGIE CORPORATION

The City Librarian, Mr. J. Noriic, received by the last American mail an invitation from the president's office of the Carnegie Corporation, New York, to make an extended trip abroad, visiting the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Europe, to inquire first hand into the latest library developments.

The corporation will, in the event of acceptance, provide a substantial sum towards the expenses of the trip. The chairman of the libraries committee, Councillor W. J. Gaudin, said today that the offer was a most generous one and also a most timely one, in view of the council's proposal to go ahead with the new City library in the near future if the poll was successful, as ho believed it must be.

Whether or not the invitation should be accepted was, of course, a matter for the council, but his own view was that, though the council would probably have to contribute towards the expenses in order to allow Mr. Norrie the fullest, facilities, the. opportunity should certainly bo accepted. It would probably mean that the poll would have to be delayed, but, anxious as everyone was to see the new library started, not only in the interests of public convenience, but also of public safety, he thought that that delay would be outbalanced by the advice which Mr. Norrie would bo able to give on his return to Wellington.
