WINTER RELIEF
CONFERENCE AT NELSON
AERODROME SUGGESTION
(Special to the "Evening rost.")
NELSON, May 15.
A conferenco of local bodies in the Kelson district was held last evening to discuss, schemes for tho relief of unemployment during tho coming winter, Mr. N. A. Vercoe, who presided, said it was felt by the local unemployment committeo that tho local bodies shquld avail themselves' of tho Unemployment Board's subsidy scheme for placing men in full-time employment. Several of tho local bodies represented were unable to suggest schemes which would absorb any number of men, but tho proposed new water supply for the city and tho development of an acrodro.mo site were advanced as major works which might be possible. The meeting passed the following motion unanimously:—"That this meeting of local bodies in association with tho .Nelson Local Unemployment Committee recommends the formation of a suitable site for an airport among tho other works suggested for a common wor.k." Mr. ■A. Gibson, A.M.1.C.E., of the Public Works Department, recently visited Nelson to inspect suitable areas for a municipal airport, and it is anticipated that his report will be available very shortly. The present aerodrome, which is maintained by the Nelson Aero Club at Stoke, is considered not to bo in the best situation for a permanent airport, and in addition the land on which it is situated is of high value. The probable situation of tho permanent aerodrome will bo on the Quarantine Peninsula, ~ Government reserve on the coast at Stoke.
