TARANAKI TRADE

QUESTION OF EXPRESS

REQUEST TO BE MADE

Renewed efforts to obtain a night railway express service between New Plymouth and Wellington are to bo mado by tho Wellington Chamber of Commerce, according to a decision made by tho council of the chamber last night. ' . -

When tho matter was raised, tho chairman (Mr. D. J. McGowan) said that tho question should not be allowed to drop. At present the Auckland business people were taking trade from Wellington, and he was in favour of the position again being placed beforo the Railways Board.' Under the present arrangements a Taranaki<man could leave New Plymouth on Friday night, transact his business in Auckland on Saturday morning, and be back homo for business on Monday morning. Ho lost only half a day at his business, whereas, if he came to Wellington he lost three days.

Mr. J. T. Martin said that the- Bailways Board would not do anything unless it paid.

Mr. M. G. C. MeCaul: I donbt whether tho Auckland-New Plymouth train pays running expenses three times a week.

Mr. A. Seed said that if the Railways Board brought up the question as to whether the train would pay they should call their bluff, ask them" to run tho train for six months, and then compare the loss with the Auckland train.

Mr. MeCaul: It is simply a matter of connection with the Limited at Marton.

Mr. McGowan suggested that they should ask the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce to co-operato witl them in. a deputation to the Eailways Board.

This course was agreed to, and tho matter was left in the hands of a small committee, with power to act.
