Some striking figui-es are given in..the seventy-sixth report .'of the; British Commissioners of Inland Revenue.
; The book shows that 3,500,000 people paid tax, in large oi- small sum's, in the year. l The sum they paid totalled £250,559,973. -Lists are printed showing the estates on which estate duty has been paid. It begins with those not exceeding£3oo gross value;-and there were 32,850 of them. The'estates '.'exceeding £3,000,000" were two. Estates between £800,000 and £l; 000,000 numbered four, those between £1,000,000 and. £1,500,000—one; and those between £2,000,000 and'£3,ooo,oo0 —one. The gross value of income, from the ownership of lands, houses, etc., was £481,313,637, and the actual assessable income £.290,484,512. . Out of .tho-*£1;324,708,694 actual assessable incomes derived from profits on businesses and professions, £519,250,005 was in respect of ■ manual workers. All these taxes .were collected at a cost of £8,153,200-^or 1.74 per cent!
