HUGHES CUP RACE
M. THOMSON THE WINNER
The Poncke Cycling Club opened its -road-racing"--season "at Kilbirnie on Saturday afternoon with a 10% miles' race for. a cup presented by Mrs. O. Hughes. The ■winner was M.; Thomson,* who was on the 2%rinn mark. W. Lasky- (scr) made fastest time. ~ , ,V ■ "'.' '
When declaring. the season open, the club's patron, ..Mr. E._ H. West, said it 1 must be gratifying to the officials to. see I such a fine muster .of competitors and friends present.- He thanked Mrs. Hughes <ior the silver cup presented by her for 'annual competition in the .opening event.

Twenty-five started in the race, the first away being Mathen and Plowman.. They were fol lowed: 4miu. later by the scratch riders,. Lasky, Blaekett, C. Ericsson. M. Thomson" ,(2%min) quickly mowed through the field, .and "was soon at the head o£ affairs. He maintained a fine lead to the finish. It was about "l%min later;'when R. Griggs itnd L. Walsh fought out, a sph'ited sprint for second place honours, the former being, successful by a halfwheel. Lasky, finishing closely behind Houston,-narrowly defeated Blackett for fastest tinie'honours. . ' :!*: "■"'*•" '
