DR. S. B. HUNTER

Tlio' death- is announced of Dr.; Samuel Benton Hunter, M.D., Ph.D., LL.B., at Aiicklnad, at the age of 75 years. ' Dr. Hunter was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne on September 17, 1859, and wont to the United States of America at an early age, studying at the Boston Dental School. He qualified as a doctor of dental surgery in 1881 and commenced his practice in Boston. Ho subsequently graduated in medicine at tho University of Ohio and- took his M.D. degree in 1887. The degree of LL.B. was taken at Ann Arbor, Michigan, and I that of Ph.D. at the Massachusetts | Institute of Technology.

Dr. Hunter came to New Zealand in 1899, acting as the agent for tlio "Kickapoo" Indian Medicine Company, and in this connection he will be remembered in tho northern parts of New Zealand as ho travelled extensively in a caravan, giving dental treatment and selling his wares. In 1900 ho set up in practice as a deritist in Stratford and before long had founded thirteen different branches between New Plymouth and Wanganui. In 1911 ho was .■joined in his business by Mr. J. S. .Lyons and afterwards all tho branches of the practice, except that at Kaponga, were disposed of. ....Dr. . Hunter was,.a. member of tho Stratford Borough Council from 1915 to 1923, and from 1916, when the borough took over the cleetricity supply scheme, he acted as chairman of tho electricity committee until his retirement in 1923. Dr. Hunter was appointed a'"Justice of the Peace on April 13, 1911. He was actively associated with the Liberal movement in the Stratford electorate, being a member of the executive in. the district for a considerable period. He was a personal friend of the -late Mr. Seddon and Sir Joseph Ward. . Dr. Hunter leaves a widow and a grown-up family of five sons and three daughters". ,
