AN ECHO OF THE WAR
"Smoke on the .Horizon" (Hodder and Stoughtan) is Vice-Admiral G. V Osbonie's account of the Mediterranean n^val fighting in. 1914-1918. There were many minor incidents in this phase of the Great War which, in the welter of bigger affairs, received scant mention at the time. The Mediterranean was tho scene of much heroism and tenacious endurance, some of tho naval operations cairicd out being of a very ticklish and hazardous nature. In this Riaphically written narrative, which is illustrated with excellent maps and photographs, is told the tale of the work of the submarines in the Straits, of the River Clyde at V Beach, of the sortie of the- Goebeil and Breslau, of the Battle of the Narrows, and of the operations of H.M.S. Doris on the Syrian Coast when the Turks put a price of £1000 on her captain's head; Other incidents, too, are recorded the whole forming one of the best of the war bookswhich deal with naval operations. .
