INFLICTED WITH A KNIFE

(By Telegraph—Press Association ) • - WAIPUKURAU, This Day.. A tragic happening, ap a result ot which a cook, Jack Williams, employed at the'- late Sir George Hunter's Porangahau Station, lost his life while visiting Papakihihaif Station, about 30 miles from Waipukurau, occurred abpnt' 5.30 o'clock yesterday afternoon in the kitchen of the men's quarters. It is understood that th . deceased was in the company of another cook, Harry Capewell, employed on the estate of the late Mr. Paul Hunter, at Papakihihau, and was found with wounds, evidently caused "by a large knife which was found nearby. There were wounds on the left arm, left shoulder, the left side of the throat, and on the right cheek, and these proved fatal. Information available tends to show that both men were usually on good terms and were also popular amonotheir associates. Williams was about 35 years old, and Capewell's age is 63 Both are reputedly former seafaring men with Naval service. • Capewell was arrested at So'clock and brought to the 'Waipukurau gaol last night in charge of Constables R. H. Moss and D. H. Sutton, of Porangahau and Waipukurau respectively. A police party and Dr. C. Raymond arrived after midnight. Capewell is stated to have been formerly a cook at Pourerere and Akifio Stations, and to have come from Sheffield, England. Williams was a native of Ireland. Later, the accused man appeared in Court and was remanded'to appear at Napier on Monday next.
