MIDLAND'S BIG WIN
By making 311 runs for the loss of four wickets in their first innings, and then disposing of Institute cheaply a second time, Midland gained an outright win in their match which was . resumed at Kelburn Park, the first day's play having taken place on the Basin Reserve. Dustin and Baker, with 134 and 135 not out respectively, were associated in a prolific partnership. The wicket was in good, condition when Midland's not-out batsmen, Dustin (54) and Baker (14), opened to the bowling of Fortune and A. McLean. Right from the commencement of proceedings it was apparent that these two batsmen were in run-making mood, and the result of their partnership was practically all that was required to place Midland in a position to declare. The fact that they added 100 runs to the previous week's score in the first forty minutes of play on Saturday shows just how they mastered the bowling from the outset of play. Runs came from practically every ball, and a better or more dashing display of batting could not have been wished for. The vigour of Baker's early play is indicated in that he drew level with Dustin at 90, although at the start o£ play he was 50 runs in arrears. The -partnership, which added 260 runs, terminated when Dustin hit a high one to square leg, where Duffy made no mistake in taking a beautiful catch. Dustin's display, which included twenty 4's, revealed some excellent stroke play. Baker continued to hit everything that came his way, and after reaching his century in 68 minutes, carried his score to 125, being still' unbeaten when the innings was declared closed. His punishing batting included seventeen 4's and one 6. O'Neill indulged in some big hitting, but did not get far, his 18 including two 6's. Bowling for Insttute, A. McLean did best, with two wickets for 66 runs, Fortune and Bilby being responsible for the other . two wickets. Institute could not hold out quite long enough in the second innings, though R. McLean did his best to stop the rot. Details: — INSTITUTE. First innings , 144 Second Innings. Duffy, lbw, b Randall 9 A.
