MR. J. M. POWELL
| The death is reported from West* port'by Press Association telegram <_% Mr. J. M. Powell, aged 93, a nativa of Newport, Monmouthshire, England, He came to Adelaide at the age of l& t later following gold mining in Victoria and Queensland. He came to Otago in, 1865, and in the same year went to tha West Coast. In his younger days fc^ took an active interest in public affairs* He was a member of the first countycouncil, all other members of the council having predeceased Mm, and he has thei distinction of being almost the last o^ the pioneers of Fox's, the only othej; person alive who was at the rash ia 1866, being Mrs. Nevin, then in her. teens. He was for many years a. member of the Charleston school committee, part of the time as secretary, and for 57 years was a member of the Oddfellows' Lodge, for some yeais of which he was secretary He was appointed a Justice of the Peace ia 1890. He is survived by two sons, Mr. E. M. Powell, secretary of the Buller Hospital Board, and Mr. J. ff, Powell, a member of the Buller County Council, and one daughter, Mrs. J* Mowatt, Wellington.
