SECONDARY SCHOOL ROWING

(To the.Editor.) :'" 'Sir,—lt was with much interest that I read Mr. Bayfeild's' statement in your recent issue of "The-Post" regarding his recent visit to Australia. Mr.' Bayfeild expressed the opinion that ■ keen interest was being taken in secondary school rownig in that country, "which,, however,-- was sadly lacking in New Zealand. To my knowledge.- there are'• only two or three'centres in this country'which are taking any active interest.in school rowing, and neither is in our Capital City, which is one of the largest, educational centres' in New Zealand; In my-opinion, Wellington has wonderful scope for secondary- school rowing; e.g.', we" have the material to make many fine oarsmen among the colleges, and we have the fine harbour to boat them. Of the latter, it was recently reported that the local University were endeavouring to build a-" clubhouse in Evans Bay. Now, what better course could be obtained for a good, straight, and calm one than this? Also, being near such colleges as Rongotai, Scots, and Wellington, it would be very central for training purposes. With the season drawing to a close very soon, I would like to _ed some of-these schools or colleges get together on this matter with a view to raising funds for, say, au eight and a four, per medium of a raffle or other collections?, so that by next season we would see some very keen competition between the local schools ami clubs in a sport which would not only prove very thrilling, but would mould them into fine men and sports, and in which they would be very proud to participate.—l am, etc., ■ . .. ONE KEEN- SUPPORTER.
