Lord Hugh Cecil, in reply to tho Bishop of Liverpool, refers to tho Bishop's '' irresponsible autocracy,'' adding: "I protest against tho refusal of an inquiry. The question must be decided ,by 'the Church. To whatever authority I can bring complaint I shajl continue to urge- it. I trust to'procure an authoritative declaration that those who reject tho deity of Christ must not preach in our churches."
A cable message received on December 29 stated that Lord Hugh Cecil had sent a petition to the Archbishop of York alleging that persons "holding erroneous and 'strange doctrines and heretical opinions" had been permitted ft> preach at Liverpool Cathedral, and stating that Lord, Cecil contemplated taking legal action against the Bishop of Liverpool for permitting Unitarians to preach there. The Bishop of Liverpool refused to take action. against the Dean over the matter.
