There .are 19,6 scores to check each week, so "it will be seen that it is no small matter to go through such a,large number, and if two sides of 'a^ team send in.different scores it entails a great deal of lini necessary work on the part of the secretary of the association. -..".. Pollock Stars. The fourth, round of the Pollock stars was;played last Friday, when the AVellington Club (holders) met Eastbourne (challengers). The latter_ club was represented by Mesdames Eobinson and Ileenen. "Both the Wellington players, Mesdames Caldow and Mantori, played better than in previous games for the Stars. Mrs. Caldow had most of the play at"-the-.commencement, but did not use tho balls to advantage until after making No: -4 hoop, when She carried her clip to 4 back, wiring at No. 1 fo* her partner. Mrs.,Manton, who, affcor: -making No. 1 failed to, get a rush fors.No. 2, laid the rush for the next turn, and on her opponents, failing to hit in. went to penultimate, .peeling her partner's ball at 4 backi The; opponents had few opportunities to score, the game'ending 26-4. The nest on; tho list of challengers is the Central Club,1 represented by Mesdames Pitwson and Eidley. The match will probably be played on Monday next. 'Association Ferns. ' The fourth round for the Association Ferns was played on the Hataitai lawns last Friday between the holders (Mesdames Richardson and Turner) and tho St. Augustine Club, represented.by Mesdames Marsden and Falder. None of the players was playing to form, al-

though the shooting on the part of the Hataitai players was excellent and ' saved the situation on more than one occasion. After >a lengthy game the Hataitai Club was successful m retaining, the trophy, the score being 26-16. McKenzie Cups. During the week the usual challenge for the McKenzie Cups was played between the holders (Kelbura' Club) and the "Woburn representatives. As is usual at the commencement of the season, the matches are' somewhat prolonged, those played for this trophy so far being no exception. Mesdames Donovan and Kane are holding their own, and have so far rented all. challenges, this week's score being"26-17 in their favour. 'The next on the list of challengers is the Lyall Bay Club. WairafSfs Championships. The Wairarapa croquet tournament commenced at Featherston on Monday last in • glorious weather. The greens were in perfect order, and the conditions generally tended towards a successful tourney. The president of the association (Mrs. Wakely) welcomed the competitors, and after the Mayoress VMiss Card) had wished all a happy and pleasant time the greens were open for play The tournament is expected to extend over a week. In the Manakau v. Foxton mafph both teams defaulted. Wanganui Club; . , Almost record entries have been received by the Wanganui Croquet Club ■for their ■December tournament, which commenced on the St. John's Hill lawns on Tuesday. The, large entry list is accounted "for by the fact that players are anxious to get in as much tournament practice as possible in readiness for the February tournament and the "gold medal" contest:to bo held m "VYanganui in March. ; ,Taranafci Jottings; ; Eecently the West End Club players from New,' Plymouth paid a visit to InglewOody and they speak in glowing teniig of the ; latter club's hospitality. TlieganiO'between Mesdames Cpdd and Ash ton '.and-^Captain Hartneli, and. Mrs. ■Fossey was'cf more than usual interest. At one stage of the game Mrs. Fossey's clip was on No. 5, Mrs. Ashton's on Noi. .6, Mrs. Oodd's on 3 back, while Captain Hartncll's clip still rested on No. 1 hoop. A breakdown ' enabled Captain Hartnell to hit in, and playing with confidence, he quadrupled Mrs. Codd's i ball and ; pegged her out. It then became a battle between Mrs. Ashton's lonej ball and the opposition, in' which i Mrs. Ashton showed up to advantage. Eeally fine play and accurate, hitting in was a revelation to the spectators, and enabled her side to carry off the honours. by five points.' A "Unlciue Position. Hod, by tho stroke of an adversary has been1 left in contact w\th blue; which is so placed in a hoop that red, when taking croquet from it, will be restricted in the direction of his stroke, in such a manner as to have no open ball within the meaning of law 21 (a). Is the roquet which is deemed, to havo bqen made under law 30 (a) to' be deemed' also to have constituted the actual commencement ©i red's turn, having, rogard to law 29 ,(c)> or is red !eiititled to lift? The answer is that red has a roquet ready made, so can■not claim to be wired or havo a lift, and under law 39, the striker shall tako croquet from, a ball.on which a roquet shall,be deemed to have been made." Therefore tho question as to whether red is entitled to have a baulk ball is over-ruled by the fact that the red is a tl. toucher" with blue. , :
