NEW YACHTING CUP
ASSOCIATION MEETING
Recently the Port Nicholson Motor-boat Club disbanded, and it was decided to use the surplus funds, amounting to £20, in the purchase of a silver cup for.presentation to the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor-boat Association. The cup was handed over to the association last evening by Mr. C. J. Mac Gibbon, -who agreed to the suggestion that it should be the trophy for the 12ft Gin New Zealand championship contest under the jurisdiction of the New Zealand Yachting Council. The chairman (Captain W. J. Keane) I said it was hoped the cup woukl be the menus of1 keeping: the spirit of the club alive, and that in:.the near future the club would be active again. Mr. O. A. Moller moved that the offer be accepted as showing a particularly line spirit on the part of the.club. Although it was most regrettable that the club should be disbanded, it was gratifying that the club had . thought of the parent body when disposing of its funds. All hoped that the club would be revived, and that the cup would keep its name alive until that time .arrivjed. He moved that the cup be offered to the Yachting Council as a trophy for the 12ft 6in champion: ship contest. An a'mendmeut moved by Mr. AY. P. Rollings to the effect that the local clubs be asked for* suggestions regarding a contest for the trophy was withdrawn. The chairman said that the province was not really in need of any> further cupsSpeakers emphasised that the presentation of the cup would.be very helpful to the council and might give a lead; to the other associations. -~ .
The motion, was carried. One v o£ the conditions on whicl. the cup was handed over to the association was that wherever possible it should be referred to as having been presented by the Port Nicholson Motor-boat Club, and it was agreed that tiiis condition should be specifically, mentioned in the letter to the' council.
The proposals made by the Canterbury Sailing and Power-boat Association re* garding a restricted class for the 18ft Vbottora yachts which the Yachting Council proposes to introduce, were briefly discussed. It %vas decided that the Wellington Association should bring the matter up at the next conference, and ask for a decision whether the class should jbe restricted or one-design; also that the Wellington councillor be instructed to vote for a one-design class. On the motion of Mr. Moller, the meeting agreed that appropriate monograms should be presented to the members of the Wellington crews in the Sanders Cup and 12ft 6in Z class New Zealand championship contests. The question . of wearing, lifebelts on centre-board boats was raised, and the risk of drowning accidents involving yachtsmen hampered by heavy clothing was emphasised. The chairman said, that he had made inquiries concerning a'suitable waterproof kapok jacket which would take the place of oilskins and lifebelt. He promised to report on the matter at the next meeting. : ~ '■ ■ A
