AHURIRI LAGOON OFFICIALLY APPROVED

NAPIEE, This Day.
Approval has been given by the Minister of Finance (the Et. Hon. J. G. Coatcs) to the proposal of the Napier Harbour Board for the development and settlement ■of the Ahuriri lagoon. Advice has been received by; the chairman of the board (i. T. M. Gccldis) from the deputy chairman of tno Unemployment Board (Mr. J. S. Jessep) that the Government is willing. to1 provide up to £50,000 for : the drainage and settlement of the area.
Tho scheme provides for the,drainage of tho Ahuriri lagoon :of '7500 acres which, was raised seven feet by the earthquake, and for the development of the land with a'view 'to" cutting it into small farms on which unemployed xuen and their families will be settled. A large part of the land1 is already high and dry, while the remainder is under: ono or two feet of Vater. Analyses which have been made by Mr. B. O. Aston, chief chemist of the.depart- ;- ment of Agriculture, have proved that the soil is composed of element- which make it eminently suitable for cultivation along certain lines..;'■ ,;. '~.'.'■
The scheme is the subject of an agreement between the Napier Harbour Board and the Government. The Government is to take (i lease of .the area, ,and is to advance £50,000 for developmental; work. This ' will include; draining, roading, fencing, sowing, and the erection of homes for tho prospective tenants; The settlers, who will, be chosen from . the .ranks, of tho ,re-, gistered unemployed, will pay a rental to .-•the Government, and, the revenue thus derived will be devoted', towards tho redemption; of the original advance of £50,000. When the sum of £50,000; has been repaid the agreement .between. the Government and the' Harbour Board will again come . under review. Be-: sides providing permanent homes and a livelihood for a largo number of workers and families,. thescheme will; giVo much employment in the ■. pre-; paration of the land, its. drainage, and development. A heavy proportion of the estimated cost of development will, bo for labour^ and the execution of the scheme is expected to be: the means of materially - easing: the. situation in Hawke's Bay. \: ; i
