In thanking Sir William Perry for his appreciative references to. the. firm,! Mr. Borthwick said that they were only1 too willing to do what they" could to; assist the Meat Board in promoting the competition! The ' competition, he considered, should! result 'In farmers' breeding' a. better type of lamb. He referred to' the value' of ,Sinithfield as an advertising medium for.New Zealand lamb and mutton and said that- when at Smithfleld last year great interest, was taken. by, the. They were a. wonderful; lot of lambs, observed the judge, Mr.' Webb. The placed pens, he added, were very good indeed and he did not think, they could be beaten anywhere in New Zealand at this time of the year. His task had been a difficult one*; In making his awards he had gone for.the low-set type and those pens showing breeding. He impressed on farmers the necessity for attending to the breeding of rams. Tho breeding, however, seemed to bo improving from year to year and he hoped it would continue to do so.

The Wairarapa competition was run this year by the Masterton A. and P. Association, which had all the detail arrangements well in hand.

The mixed foursomes for the Shandon Golf Club's official closing will be played afternoon.
