AT ELLERSLIE

BAROSCOPE AGAIN WINS

MILE TO MASTER NORVAL

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to the "Evening Post.") , AUCKLAND, This Day.

The conditions were again unfavourable for the rnces at EllerslL todny, heavy showers being experienced in the forenoon and light rain fell intermittently during the racing. The totalisator investments were £17,141, compared with £20,939 for the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £3795. The total for the meeting was £33,583, compared with £46,848 10s last year,, a decrease of £13,262 10s. -n Tavern Knight, who had run quite a good race in the Guineas, was at a remarkably good price in the Normanby Handicap, and he won well. , Star Artist and Supreme Ruler were the pacemakers, whereas, Don't Lap, Tavern Knight, and Good Run were the last tvio when the field quickly strung out. Jewelled Girdle pushed, through on the inside of the leading pair at the home turn, where Tavern Knight and Good Run had fun up handy. Tavern Knight finished strongly to win. by nearly a length, with necks separating Holly Lv, Jewelled Girdle, Good Run, Don't Lap, and Star Artist. The winner registered a smart performance. GREAT FINISH IN HURDLES, Cadaris, with his saddle slipped right back, gallantly beat Wee Pat in the Manukau Hurdles. The latter was in front most lof the way. but did not jump too well. It was a great finish all the way from the last fence. Free Air was a poor third, and Billy Boy was last. Coachman was well up when he fell at the penultimate hurdle, and Cruachan toppled over him. 'v . . Exaggeration made no race ot me Epsom Handicap. Pomp began best, and Tradesman 'was the slowest away. Running to the straight there was little between British Columbia, Puss Moth, and Tradesman, with Porotiti ana Exaggeration following. Over the last bit Exaggeration went right away to win Dy nearly four lengths,' there being very little between British Columbia, Fuss Wotm and King's Archer, with, Hampton Park, Greek Gold, Tradesman* and Porotiti next to finish. BAROSCOPE'S SUPERIORITY. The King Edward Memorial Handicap provided a great race, with' the whole field within five lengths of .the winner. Prince Val and L'Allegro earned the held along at a solid pace early, but making the borne turn there was little between View Halloo (who had run around the held to take a clear lead three furlongs from home), Lord Yal,. Prince Val, L'Allegro Baroscope (wide out), Carfex, and _All Humbug. To within a distance View Halloo still hold charge from Lord Val, Baroscope, and Alloy, and in a .fine struggle!. Baroscope won by three parts of a length from Lord Val, with-little, between Alloy, View Halloo, Red Bun, All Humbug, Prince Val, and Carfex, the last being Spiral, but even^he was not far away. It was a, good race and: Baroscope, who covered a lot of ground, once again proved his superiority. Lord Val hung on well, while Alloy, who, with Red Sun, tailed the field for a mile, was asked to do the impossible. View Halloo might have won had his rider not asked him to go tod soon. Red, Sun, ca.me home well. The winner is not in the Auckland, Cup. EASY WIN IN STEEPLECHASE. Patutahi won the > Onehunga Steeplechase fairly easily. He ran into the lead five lengths from .'home and was. just clear of Zane Grey (who fell here), Kairuri, Valpeen, and Riotous. From this out j Patutahi was always the- winner. i Kairuri finished on to just beat Valpeen for second .place, Riotous being fourth and Creina's King fifth. ~ / ';J THE MUSKET STAKES. Gay Egypt, the favourite in the Musket Stakes, was tied up by the going, and Sirona, the second fancy, led all the way. Gallant-Knight and' Gay Egypt were handy at the home turn, where they

both ran wide, while Wahroonga and Sporting Song were running.next. Sirona went on to win by a couple of lengths from. Wahroonga niid Gallant Knight, who were a dead-heat for second place, clear of Gay Egypt, with the remainder well back. The winner is by Gay Shield from Phaola, so., is related to Atnmon Ra. HOBSON HANDICAP. There wns a mild surprise, in the Hobson Handicap, Expectancy, having only her second race, winning narrowly, from Bugle Call and Allegretto, .neither of whom was well favoured, in the running. This trio and My Money were bunched coming into the straight, and Expectancy ran on strongly when challenged. My Money should soon show 'improvement. Moon Fleet failed to act in the going. THE LIVERPOOL HANDICAP. Master. Norval won the Liverpool Handicap very well and effectively completed the rout today of the favourites. Woodfull and Senegal set the pace for most of the journey, but Master Norval moved up fast crossing the top and. was the first into the home stretch, to go on and win comfortably from a bunch ■ comprising Kiltowyu, Woodfull, and Prolyso. ; RESULTS IN DETAIL. / , Tformanby Handicap, of 200 .soys; 1 mile.— 3-3 Tavern Knight, car.
