RESERVE BANK BILL
Only four speakers participated in tho second reading debate on the Ecserve Bank of New Zealand Bill in tho Houso of Eoprescntatives yesterday. It had been hoped to make an early start on tho debate, but a report from the Public Petitions Committee recommending that the Government should institute an inquiry into tho monetary system gave rise to a lengthy debate in tho afternoon. Members from all sides of the House urged the .Government to accept tho recommendation of the Committee, but tho Prime Minister (the Et. Hon. G. W. Forbes) expressed tho view that- the setting up of a Committee was not necessary." Tho report was referred to tho Government "for consideration." The Minister of Finance (the Et. Hon. J. G. Coates) commenced his second-reading speech on the Eeserve Bank of New Zealand Bill at 4.20. o'clock in the afternoon, and lie did not complete his speech until nearly half-past eight in the evening. Mr. Coates dealt at considerable length with tho advantages of a Central Bank. Ho was followed by the Leader of tho Opposition (Mr. M. J. Savage), and tho only other speakers were the Minister of Defence (tho Hon. J. G. Cobbe) and Mr. D. G. Sullivan (Labour, Avon). The debate is being resumed toclajr,
