Married Four Times,

The Earl of Eanfurly, sometime Governor of New Zealand, whose. death was announced this week, will be succeeded in the title and estates by his grandson, Viscount Northland, aged 20. The mother of this young peer has the somewhat unusual distinction of having been married four times, states an exchange. Her first husband was the late Lord Banfurly's only sou and heir, Viscount Northland, who was killed in action in 1915, being survived by his widow and two sons. Lady Northland remarried in 1917 the Hon. Geoffrey Mills,'son of Lord Hillingdon, who died the same year; in 1918 Captain J. S. Michael Wardell, of the lOtli Hussars, became her third husband. Some years later she divorced him, and in 1929 took as her fourth husband Mr. Julian Joseph Lezard, of Kimbcrley, South Africa. A writer in an exchange says:— "It has been written by a cynic that a second marriage is a triumph of faith over experience! What a fourth must be staggers tho imagination!" Advertising Club. It was decided by the committee set up recently to organise an Advertising Poster Ball that the proceeds would be devoted to the Community Interests Princess in the Confidence' Carnival. A number of sub-committees were set up at the recent meeting, and instructed to report at a meeting to be held next week. Conveners of committees are as follows:—Decoration and lay out, Mr. J. N. Wallace (with Mr. Wenyss as deputy); space, display, and prizes, Mr. 11. Male; catching, Mr. D'Arey Allen; publicity, Mr: Colin Rich; finance, Mr. J. llusden Salt with the chairman of each sub-committee. .It was" decided'to leave the matter of music and programme- to tho general committee. A very strong general committee is at work, and the work of organising is being taken up most enthusiastically. .•;■■■ ■ London Antiquities. . A lantern lecture by Mr. G. W. Barltrop on "Some Antiquities and Curiosities of London" will be given this evening at St. Mark's Church School. Mr. .Barltrop's notes and slides are particularly interesting, as he collected his information and took photographs of the places he is-show-ing, when in London, and he has spared, no pains in procuring the correct information.. The monthly • meeting of. the Eastbourne branch of the- Mothers' Union was held in the Parish Hall a few evenings ago. Thero was a large attendance of members, who greatly appreciated an address on gardening, with special referenco to the grafting; of roses, delivered by Mr; Child; On behalf of members Mrs. Kaine (president) thanked Mr. Child for his address. Supper and a talk brought a very happy evening to a close. Muritai Tennis Club Dance. Extensive preparations are being made for the annual dance of the Muritai Tennis Club, which will be held in the Day's Bay Pavilion on Saturday evening. There will be an ■• excellent orchestra, a tempting supper, and ample entertainment will lie. provided for the large crowd of dancers who are expected. .. • Farewell to Mrs. Baxter. Representing the. women's division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, Mrs. Lnndius and Mrs. T. B. McNeil farewer- I Mrs, T. Baxter on tho Makura prior to her departure for San Francisco on Tuesday. They presented Mrs. Baxter, who had been entertained by the Women's Division in other parts

of New Zealand, with a copy of theitf paper and their cookery-book, also with a posy of bbronia. Mrs. Baxter was very enthusiastic about her brief trip, to New Zealand and the welcome she had received.
