SLAUGHTERING ACT
SUGGESTED AMENDMENTS
A promise that reconsideration would be given to requests to have the Slaughtering Act amended was made by the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. C. E. Macmillan.) this morning, when further representations -were made to him, on behalf of the, South Auckland Master Butchers' Association. The changes desired by the master butchers affect many sections of the Act, but the principal ones are that farmers should be permitted to kill stock only for their own consumption, except with the special permission of the Minister, that no pigs should be killed for sale unless royaltios, are paid, arid that the freezing companies should make- a . new;. and more comprehensive form of return of stock killed for local consumption. The master butchers also suggest that instead of the present provision- permitting local authorities owningl abattoirs to make sufficient.profits to pay working expenses and 7 per cent, oh. the outlay, the profits should lie reduced to 5 per cent. Similar representations were made to the Minister some time ago, and he stated at that time that, he'did not think the Government would be able to introduce the amendments during the present session. In view of the arguments advanced today,, the Minister promised to reconsider the matter.
