£675 FOR V.M.C.A.

MISS HOPE GIBBONS WINS

After a procession of concerts, bridge parties, dances, and similar' profitable functions, the V.M.C.A. carnival concluded on Saturday afternoon with a garden party held at Mr. and Mrs. Hope B. Gibbons's home, "Ngaroma;" Lyall Bay. This was the united effort of the committees of the four competing teams. "Paddy's Market" stalls were set up on the tennis court, where several side-shows and skill competitions were also well patronised. A pleasant afternoon was spent by the many visitors in wandering through tho lovely grounds with their fine sea and landscape views, and in taking tea on the terraced lawn. RESULTS ANNOUNCED. The interest of the general public in the result of the'queen carnival contest was shown on Saturday evening. The V.M.C.A. Hostel in Willis Street was crowded from an early hour till nearly midnight. Musical" items and dancing helped to pass the time. Mr. Wilson played dance music, Mrs. T. v Watson sang, and Mr. Will Mason conducted community singing. Mr. R. H. Nimmo announced the results which were.cheered enthusiastically by an excited gathering. They were as follows: — Miss Paddy Hope Gibbons, Senior Mem- . bers' and Optimists' Queen, 56,238 votes. ■ . . . Miss Dorothy Hay, Ladies' Auxiliary • Queen, 53,670 votes, Miss Joi Denby, Boys' Division Queen, /■ 36.045 votes. m Miss- Gwenda Norman, Gymnasium Queen, 25,061 votes.' The crowning ceremony will take place in the Concert Chamber on October 18, during a revue, in which members of the leading dramatic and operatic societies will take part. Mr. Harison Cook will be director. . The counting of votes, supervised by Mr. J. L. Arcus, auditor for the Y.M.C.A.J shows the result of the carnival to bo £725, leas an allocation of £50 made from V.M.C.A, Street Day (not actually carnival proceeds) leaving the net proceeds from the carnival £675. The objective was £500.
