"THE DEVIL'S OWN"

CUP WON BY C. C. PHILLIPS

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day. The tournament styled the "Devil's Own," which is an annual fixture with the legal fraternity, was concluded at Hokowhitu yesterday. The day was bitterly cold, with occasional showers. The course, however, was in good order,, and a high standard of golf was maintained. Before lunch the semi-finals of the "Devil's Own" Cup and Mortgagors' Relief Stakes were played, also a foursomes competition. The semi-finalists for the cup were N. H. Rawson, G. C. Phillips, B. J. Jacobs, and K. C. Clayton. Phillips and Jacobs accounted for the other two and advanced to the final. In the semi-finals of the Relief Stakes P. W. Dorrington beat W.I. Fitzherbert and L. C. Hemery beat E. T. Gifford. The finals were played yesterday afternoon, Phillips, of Wellington, winning the Cup, and-Hemery, also of Wellington, the Relief Stakes. Both games were closely contested. In the cup final Jacobs established an early lead, but had lost this at the turn. From then on Phillips played very fine golf, and, despite the good fight put up by Jacobs, he clinched the match on the fifteenth green. y In the.other final there was little between Hemery and Dorrington (Danne■virke) at any stage. Hemery won. but it would not have taken much to swing the match the other way. ;
