The whole of Manchukuo is now. united in a three-line defence against the southward sweep of the dread bubonic and pneumonic plagues, which at present are raging north of Supingkai, claiming hundreds of lives. It is estimated, that 600 succumbed in the last fortnight, and hundreds also are reported dying of the scourge in the Tungliao districts and other affected areas in Taonan, while the Chinese Eastern Kailway authorities have established quarantine stations at Tsitsihar and other important stations for passengers travelling via Siberia. With the approach of the cold weather the situation grows worse, and river traffic may be ! suspended. •
