TOURNAMENT OPENS

YESTERDAY'S GAMES

Play began yesterday in the seventh annual New Zealand badminton championship and handicap tournament. Leading players from Wellington and other parts of the Dominion are taking part, and the tournament, which is being held in the Town Hall, promises to be a great success. Badminton has made tremendous progress during the last year or two, its adherents increasing by hundreds each year.

The tournament was officially opened last night V the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop), who was introduced to the players and spectators by Mr. P. B. Cooke, president of the Wellington Association.

Mr. Hislop mentioned that the following New Zealand champions were competing this year:—Mr. G. Martin (men s singles), Miss J. Ramsay (ladies' singles), Messrs. A. F. Weir and M. T. Wilson (men's doubles), and Miss I. Ellett, holder of the combined doubles with Mr. J. Southon. In addition a number of North Island champions were competing. The management was pleased to welcome Mr. E. W. Griffiths, president of the New Zealand Badminton Federation, and especially pleased fo see him competing. The federation, said Mr.- Hislop, was glad to announce that a handsome cup had been donated by Wisden's for interprovincial matches, the first of which, between Auckland and Wellington, would be played during the tournament. In conclusion, Mr. Hislop welcomed the competitors, and expressed the hope that they would have keen and hard-fought games. Play yesterday was tonfined principally to the preliminary rounds of the championship events, and some excellent games were seen. « The championships will be advanced a stage further tonight. The semi-finals will be played tomorrow, commencing at 5 p.m., and the finals will be run off on Saturday. The results are as follows: — A GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP. Men's Singles. First round.—G.
