.A"police raid on ;i suspected, opium den at 21 Haining Street early yesterday morning resulted in the appearance of' two Chinese, Jack Nam and Fan Tue, before Mr. E. Page, S.M., at tho Magistrate's Court.
Jack Nam pleaded guilty to a charge of using the premises for the purpose of smoking opium, but not guilty to a charge of wilfully obstructing SeniorSorgcant Scott in the execution of his duly. ■•,:■._■
Fan Tuc pleaded nut guilty, to a charge of boing found unlawfully , en premises used for tho purpose of' sniok,Lng opium. . . ~ ■•, The two accused were the only persons found on the premises. Sub-Inspector Martin said that the house, the doors and windows of which were heavily barricaded, was raided at 12.30 a.m. today by a party of police under Senior-Sergeant Scott. The premises were raided in June last; and the previous occupier was fined, failing to get a response to their knocking, the police obtained a ladder and commenced to remove some of the roofing iron, j whoreupon the door; was opened. ; Jack Nam.was fined £50 for permitting the premises to bo used for the purpose of smoking opium, and .£5 for obstructing the police. , | •Fan Tue, who stated that he had gone to the house to listen to the wireless, was convicted and lined £12 10s.
