WELLINGTON PRESBYTERY
The Wellington Presbytery at a. meeting on Tuesday passed- the following motion with reference to the work of the New Zealand Alliance:—"Presbytery affirms its appreciation of the emphasis which the New Zealand Alliance is placing on the education of the community regarding the moral and physical evils of alcohol, and congratulates' the Alliance on the donation of £500 which it has recently, received for this purpose.": It wasreported to.the Presbytery that the first pamphlet to be issued as a result Of this donation is to throw light on the home brewing of wines and beer; and the dangers which may arise; therefrom. :■' s • :
The following minute of appreciation of the work of; the Rev. Archibald E. Hunt, who recently retired" from the charge of. Johnsonville, was also passed: "In view of Mr. Hunt's resignation of the charge of Johngonville, and his retirement from the active /work of the ministry,- we desire to place on record our warm appreciation of the service lie has rendered to the cause of Christ in the foreign field and at home. In1 New Guinea and Samoa he has proved himself a devoted and successful missionary. He came late in life into our church, but his work as minister of the Ormond-Takapau and Johnsonville congregations was-of a.high order and will'ltot soon be forgotten. His I preaching gifts have been, specially admired, and have," no doubt, borne good fruit. During the brief time that he has been a member of the Presbytery he has enjoyed the respect and esteem of his brethren both for his own and for his work's sake. Now that the days of weakness are come upon him the Presbytery prays that he may prove the truth of the inspired words, 'God hath given to us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace.'" Presbytery decided to recommend to the General Assembly that Mri Hunt be given the status of minister emeritus with a seat on the Church courts.
An overture to: the General Assembly urging more definite tests in church • history for, prospective ministers was heartily approved, and its mover and seconder, the Revs. D. M. Hercus and Dr. Lan Fraser, were appointed to support it before the General Assembly. ' , -
