TO CONSERVE INCOME
THEFTS BY OLD MAN
Stated by Sub-Inspector Martin at the Magistrate's Court on Friday to bo nothing else but a sneak-thief, with a bank account "of approximately £100, Benedict Waring, aged 69, was .fined £10, iv default two months' imprisonment, by Mr. W. F. Stilwell, 8.M., on a charge of stealing goods valued at Bs-4d, the property of some person or persons unknown. ' . Sub-Inspector Martin said that at 11.30 p.m. on Friday, a constable noticed the accused in Moxham Avenue, and, being suspicious about a bulge, under his coat, took-him to the police, station, where he was scarehed.ln the accused's possession were found a paijr of leather soles, a banana, and some' groceries. Subseauontly, the accused admitted that ho had been in town last evening, and had gono to different shops in Cuba Street and taken the goods. The accused, who had a banking-account, had previously been for.-stealing milk, and appeared to bo nothing but a sneak-thief. :•'.. -. • '.....,,:.. The accused, told the - Magistrate that he had stolen t'ho goods to conserve his income., • . . "Mr. Stilwell: That is all very fine, but you cannot augment your income at the expense of other people. "I do not like sending a.nian of your age to gaol," he , continued, "but that is whore you are heading for. But as far as this case is concerned, I am going to give you another: chance. I am going to'.flne.you-on-this^ocoasion, but next tinie you will go to gaol." The Magistrate then fixed the penalty at £10. .■■■-.
