HIDES AND SKINS PRICES

Most values were unchanged at the fortnightly sales of hides and sheepskins held : by-Auckland brokers on Tuesday. Light grade hides were a shade easier, but calfskins; appreciated sharply, due to short supplies. There was a large attendance of buyers, exporters taking the bulk of the offering. W. Weddel ad Co., London, July 6, report:—"lt has been disappointing to see so few European buyers snowing interest in hides.' It is true that a good deal of business was done in Hamburg last week, but chiefly in frigorifico varieties of the cheaper qualities, or from districts where the,-hides are not in such good condition as in the plate. These rough-grained hides have been selling at comparatively low prices. 11l some cases Id or more less than Argentine sorts. Our chief hope lies still with North America. If they continue to lead the ■way with advanced prices for all commodities, this will doubtless before long bring many European tanners into the. market as well, as the latter will be forced to follow suit. So many hides which have in the last few years been taken regularly by European operators are day by day finding their way to North America, and the obvious effect of this is. to cause a big jump up in Europea'h hide values in the not very distant future. One sale, for example, of 25,000 B.A. Americanos, was reported sold this week to a North American tanner at 6 7-8 dto 7d. This is the sort of thing that is bound to have its effect."
