MR. C. S. SOMERVILLE
Mr. Christopher Sproule Somcrville died at his residence, 246 Taranakl Street, this morning at the age of 87 years. : . '■ The late-Mr. Somerville was the second son of Mr. Chris. Somerville, of Dullaghan, Tyrone,,. Ireland, and arrived in Wellington in March, 1866, at the age of 20 years. He saw Wellington city grow from a,f ew scattered farms to its present state, and his occupation-o£ cab-driver, which.he followed from 1866 • until he retired eighteen years' ago, gave- him an intimate knowledge of early Wellington and its people. In the days before the motor, the services of "Christy" Somervtlle were in great demand . by many of Wellington's • leading citizens, and a job that wais regularly his' was the carrying of gold, under escort, between the banks and the trains and the ships. Up to the time of his death he maintained a keen interest in the city and its inhabitants. The late Mr. Somerville was a member of the Early Settlers' Association and a foundation member of the Ulster True Blue, No. 16, L.O.L. Lodge, and of the John Knox Lodge, No. 50, P.AJF.S.O.A. He also belonged to the King David Koyal Arch Preceptory, 395. - His wife predeceased hint eighteen years ago,.'but he is survived by two unmarried daughters, who lived with him in Taranaki Street, and another daughter, Mrs. J. G. Stevenson, of Dunedin. There are four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A-brother, Mr. Oliver Somerville, resides in Wellington, and a brother'and sister are still on the old farm in Ireland.
