STREET GARDENS
IMPROVING THE CITY
Apart from the reserves proper, there are about the city a number of street gardens, states the Director of Parks and Beserves in his report to the reserves Committee. Tho most prominent of these is the Canal Reserve in Kent and Cambridge Terraces. The situation here for the growth of flowers is perhaps the'worst in Wellington, yet the display is worth while, there being some colour most of the year. A still greater trouble than' the situation is from dogs, which do a great deal of damage by running over and diggiug up the beds, some of which have to bo planted up half a dozen times during tho year. " * Other small gardens are those on the civic centre, Oriental Bay quarry, Wellington Road, Crawford Road, Pirio Street, the Zoo gates, etc., etc. These small improvements have done away with a number of unsightly cornors, and the effect is beginning to tell, and favourable comments are made by residents and visitors, on the improved appearance of the city in this respect. The Harbour Board plantations in Worser. Bay are under the control of [the reserves department and receive regular attention. . There are also a j largo number of small plantations and street trees in both Mirainar and Soatoun. These are doing well and will in a few years transform the appoarance of these.suburbs. Miramar seems to be the one district in tho city that allows for the growing of street trees, I both the footpaths and streets having sufficient width for this purpose.
